Railroading is a unique profession. It has been romanticized for over a century in song and film and verse. It isn’t a typical job – it carries with it an identity. When people learn that you are a railroader they don’t often forget it.
And while railroading brings comradery and pride it can also too often come at a price to our mental health. In recent years, that price has only gotten worse, as railroad careers take people further and further from their homes and loved ones. Increasingly, we are absent for special moments or even the daily chores of life that we leave our spouses to shoulder, often alone.
Sadly, in the last year we have seen a recent spate of suicides within our ranks and generally within the rail profession. It can be very difficult out there between the steel rails. You are not alone. This job and our friends in it are Brothers and Sisters and we are here for each other. Do not hesitate to ask or seek out help. It is available and it can be a lifeline.
Real people. Real life. Real solutions.
