The AFL-CIO Department of education recently announced the
publication of its 1998 AFL-CIO Scholarship Guide - A Source for Union Sponsored
Scholarships, Awards and Student Financial Aid. This guide lists approximately
3,000 scholarships worth nearly $4,000,000 that are offered directly by individual unions,
state federations and local central bodies.
The AFL-CIO Scholarship Guide aids union members, their dependents and
students in their search for financial assistance to cover the cost of attending colleges
and other post-secondary institutions, including two- and four-year colleges and
universities, graduate schools, culinary institutions, musicians training institutes,
vocational, technical and nursing schools, and so on.
The guide is divided into five sections: scholarships and awards from AFL-CIO
international and national unions; AFL-CIO state federations; AFL-CIO local central labor
councils; local unions; and special categories. In addition, the guide offers a
bibliography of additional financial aid programs and other sources of information that
may be of assistance in covering the high cost of paying for a college education. Information
about each scholarship should be obtained directly from contact persons listed in the
guide.
Scholarships listed in the guide are normally only available for union
members and their families from the union sponsoring the scholarship. If a
scholarship is awarded to the general public, it will be indicated in the Eligibility
part of the specific scholarship listing.
Single copies of the guide are available without charge for union members only. Copies
are $3.00 each for all others. Requests and checks (payable to the Secretary-Treasurer
AFL-CIO) should be sent to the AFL-CIO Department of Support Services, 815 16th
Street, N.W., Room 209, Washington, D.C. 20006.
The guide will also be available online via LaborNet in the General Information
Library. |
