Plans are now being made for the 15th annual observance
of the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration with labor events
being held around the country.
"We continue to honor the integral role Dr. King played in
upholding the rights of workers to organize and be treated with
dignity and respect in the workplace and in society," wrote
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney to the heads of affiliated unions,
including BMWE President Mac A. Fleming.
Sweeney was seeking support and participation of all affiliates for
the AFL-CIO's plans to celebrate in Atlanta, the birthplace of Dr.
King. "In keeping with his legacy of a dream for all Americans,
we are proud to begin the new millennium" in Atlanta, Sweeney
said.
During the week of January 13 through 18, the AFL-CIO's program
will be focusing on Dr. King's selfless commitment to workers and
their families with a series of community service events and programs.
These events will include providing food and clothing to the homeless
and families in need; visiting the elderly and shut-in, and retired
workers; making repairs to senior citizens and battered women shelters
and other community activities.
Additionally, the labor movement will sponsor a labor breakfast,
support an ecumenical religious service, a town hall meeting and the
traditional march and rallies.
The support and participation of all affiliated members will be
essential in making the AFL-CIO's plans as successful as this year's
celebration in Birmingham, Alabama, which was a huge success.
The BMWE encourages all BMWE members who can to participate in this
celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
