Founded in 1956 and granted its official designation by Congress in 1958, the National Railroad Museum has been preserving our nation's railroad heritage for more than 40 years. Since 1958, the Museum has focused on preserving historically significant railroad equipment and artifacts. In keeping with its national orientation, locomotives and rolling stock have been gathered from all over the country. Today the Museum's collection features over 75 pieces of equipment with a value in excess of $4,000,000. Included are 12 steam locomotives, 12 diesels, 24 passenger cars and 30 freight and work cars, many of which are unique. Over 90% of the equipment is on display and 12 cars and locomotives are open to the public. These include steam locomotives, a diner, sleeping car, cabooses and mail car. In addition, vintage coaches carry visitors on the Museum's train ride. The Museum also houses an extensive collection of railroad artifacts and documents which support research for the development of exhibit and education programs.
