The most terrible days of our profession are the ones when a railroader reports to work and doesn’t return home. It is an acute pain and deep sorrow that never eases.

Railroading is a job that carries with it risk. It’s a hazardous line of work and while we all recognize it, it’s something we will never accept. Rail safety measures have improved and efforts continue every day to build upon that success, yet still, whenever a railroader dies on the job, that tragedy bears with it a responsibility to push policies to a place where, one day, we can prevent all pain and heartbreak resulting from the death of a friend and loved one.

Workers Memorial Day is an annual pause to reflect on the dangers of our profession, and a reminder that our dignity at work requires the ability to come home to our families and friends. A safe and secure workplace is a demand that is unequivocal. Let us commit now and forever to such an ideal. We deserve nothing less.
